Liberty Bell
The Liberty Bell is an iconic symbol of American independence, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The bell was commissioned in 1752 by the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly from the London firm of Lester and Pack (later Passmore) and cast with its distinctive large crack by local workmen Thomas Letteney and John Stow at the Whitechapel Foundry in Aldgate.
It was the first rung on July 8, 1776, after the reading of the Declaration of Independence, and again for George Washington’s birthday in 1800. It was the last rung on February 22, 1846, at the old Philadelphia County Court House to mark George Washington’s Birthday. In Philadelphia, it is a tradition for hotel guests on the Fourth of July to step outside and ring the Liberty Bell.
Independence Hall
Independence Hall is the building where both the United States Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were debated and adopted. It is now the centerpiece of the Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia. The building was completed in 1753 as the colonial courthouse for the Province of Pennsylvania. It became the principal meeting place of the Second Continental Congress from 1775 to 1783 and was the site of the Philadelphia Convention of 1787, which produced the United States Constitution.
Philadelphia City Hall
The hall, located in Philadelphia, is the largest city hall in the United States, and the fifth largest in the world. At 548 feet (167 m), Philadelphia City Hall is the tallest masonry building in the world. It is also one of the heaviest, weighing approximately 925 tons (839 metric tons). The building was designed by architect John McArthur Jr., with Horace Trumbauer as supervising architect. Construction began in 1871 and was completed in 1901. Philadelphia City Hall is a National Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art
The Philadelphia Museum of Art is an art museum originally built for the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The main museum building was completed in 1928 on Fairmount, a hill located at the northwest end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway at Eakins Oval. The museum administers collections containing over 240,000 objects including major holdings of European, American, and Asian origin. The various classes of artwork include sculpture, paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, armor, and decorative arts.
Philadelphia Zoo
The Philadelphia Zoo is situated on the west bank of the Schuylkill River. It is the oldest of its kind in the United States. The zoo is one of the premier zoos in the world for breeding animals that are difficult to breed in captivity. It is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
Fairmount Park
This is the largest park in Philadelphia and a great place to relax and enjoy the fresh air. Fairmount Park is home to many Philadelphia landmarks such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Zoo, and the Please Touch Museum. The park has miles of hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, playgrounds, and a water park.
The Philadelphia Flower Show
The Philadelphia Flower Show is the world’s oldest and largest indoor flower show. The show is held every year at the Philadelphia Convention Center. The show features hundreds of exhibitors from around the world, displaying their flowers and plants. The Philadelphia Flower Show also has a wide variety of entertainment, including live music, dancers, and food vendors.
