Moving house can be one of the most stressful events one encounters in their adult life. But moving house with a toddler in tow brings with it an altogether new level of stress and work. Because it’s not easy sorting, packing, planning self storage solutions, unpacking and re-arranging every item and room in your house with an inquisitive toddler wanting to undo everything you just did!
But we’ve put together some tried-and-tested tips for you to be able to move home with a toddler with minimal stress.
-
Do as much as you can when your toddler is sleeping or at nursery
Beggars cannot be choosers, so make the most of the toddler-free opportunities you get. If they go to nursery for a few hours a day or a few days a week, make sure you have nothing else planned at that time and do as much unpacking and packing as you can. Likewise, sort out things (especially delicate glassware or statues) that you don’t want your toddler touching when they are napping or sleeping.
-
Empty boxes make for great distractions
If you have your toddler with you 24/7 or don’t have the option to pack while they are at nursery, then distraction is your next best bet. Set aside one or two big cardboard boxes and let your toddler pretend it’s a boat or spaceship or house. Leave some crayons and stickers around so decorating their box can be another activity to keep them entertained.
-
Let your toddler ‘help’ in any way they can
Your toddler will be less of a nuisance if you can think of ways to let him or her help. If a box needs simple sorting out (like yellow colour here and blue colour there) or just emptying or filling – something simple that a toddler can manage – give them the task. Of course, make sure there is nothing breakable or pointed in the box. This way they will be distracted long enough for you to finish off another task, and will be helping you as well. Win-win!
-
Pack your toddler’s things last, not first
It might be tempting to pack away all of the toys and other paraphernalia that comes with having a toddler, but it is not the wisest thing to do. Toddlers have a knack of wanting or needing the very thing you don’t have at arm’s reach, or that you have packed away! And if you have a toddler you will know that they don’t take ‘no’ for an answer.
So instead of rummaging through box after box searching for that particular toy, or blanket, just leave packing their stuff right till the end. You won’t regret it!

Try and get help or childcare on the actual moving day
This is an important and very stressful day, especially if you are moving without the help of movers. Try and arrange some form of childcare for your toddler so that they are not in the way and you can concentrate on the move.
